Galaxy Note 3 launch: Samsung to release Galaxy Note 2 refresh with Snapdragon 600 as well?

July 23, 2013 | 2

Recent benchmark results point to a Snapdragon 600 equipped Galaxy Note 2 in the works indicating that Samsung may have already started working on a refresh of its popular phablet.

The latest Antutu benchmarks points to a certain GT-N7108D device that has appeared on the official Bluetooth SIG website. According to the benchmark results, the device is powered by a 1.9GHz processor and runs Android 4.2.2 and scores a whopping 26,901 – taking third place just behind Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Galaxy S4 LTE-Advanced.

From the looks of it seems that the Galaxy Note 2 (refresh) is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor as compared to Exynos 4412 which powered the original Note 2. Antutu scores of the GT-N7108D are double that of the original Note 2 indicating that the new phablet has been made keeping in mind current technology and need for high-speed mobile computing devices. There has been no official confirmation from Samsung about this undisclosed device.

In related news, Galaxy Note 3 specifications have emerged which point to a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen, 3GB RAM, 13-megapixel camera, and could be powered by a Snapdragon 800 or Exynos 5 processor.

Apple, Samsung reportedly involved in settlement talks

July 23, 2013 |

Apple and Samsung are busy ironing out difference ahead of the new patent infringement trial slated for November this year and according to reports the two companies are negotiating a cross-licensing deal to end the patent row.

A report on The Korea Times reported that the South Korean electronics giant is trying to sort out key differences with Cupertino. The talks have begun late last year and it seems that they have “come down to the issue of fees for Apple.” From the looks of it, Apple holds the key as to whether the deal will go through or not and if this deal doesn’t go through chances are the companies will continue to battle it out over their respective patent pools.

One of the sources in the report said, “Both companies are now finding better conditions to bring the settlement talks on their sides. That’s why they are paying keen attention to two upcoming separate decisions by the USITC.”

Back in June the USITC banned Apple from importing iPad 2 and iPhone 4 into the country after it found that Cupertino was violating some of the patents held by Samsung. However, the final decision would come in August as there is a 60-day review period wherein it is being decided whether Samsung has violated Apple’s patents or not.

Analyst: Microsoft Xbox One, Sony PlayStation 4 shortage likely at launch

July 22, 2013 |

An analyst has claimed that the recently announced Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 gaming consoles are likely to face shortage of supply soon after they are launched publicly due to “complexity” of coordinating the launches.

While speaking with Gamespot Colin Sebastian an analyst at Robert W. Baird said that the shortages are more likely to happen and that may be a probably reason why both the companies have been rather judicious when it comes to allocating pre-order units to online retailers.

“This also partly explains why the manufacturers have been somewhat judicious in allocating pre-sale units to retailers, so that there won’t be a lot of unhappy customers from day one,” Sebastian said.

Even though the dates haven’t been confirmed by either vendor, both the companies are expected to launch their consoles well in advance of Thanksgiving / Black Friday sales in a bid to capture the most number of sales.

“From a timing perspective, both platforms will want to launch before Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and ideally at least a couple of weeks in advance of that in order to replenish the retail channel,” Sebastian said.

Samsung smartwatch to debut alongside Galaxy Note 3

July 22, 2013 |

Samsung is set to launch its smartwatch on September 6 alongside its Galaxy Note 3, fresh reports claim.

Samsung has allegedly named its smartwatch GEAR and the trademark filings do indicated that the device is indeed a smartwatch like device which will function as an accessory to Samsung smartphones. There are reports that Sony, Apple, LG, Microsoft and Google – all are running the smartwatch race with Sony having already launched its iteration of the wearable gadget, the stakes are high.

The reason Samsung wanting to launch a smartwatch earlier as compared to Apple is that it intends to be seen as a leader as opposed to a follower, which has been the case in most of its devices – bar the phablets, which Apple hasn’t bothered to release up until now.

In related Samsung news, the Galaxy Note 3 marker is also set to release its new Exynos 5 Octa application processor sometime later this week. The processor has had overheating problems which seems to have been fixed now.
