The popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp will now be available for free on iOS platform as well just like Android and Windows Phone, the company has announced.

Users can download the app and use it for free for the first year after which they will have to pay a nominal subscription fee of $1 per year as long as they want to continue using it. Users who have already bought the paid app need not worry as they can keep on using the app for life without paying anything extra.

WhatsApp updated its iPhone app to version 2.10.1 and with it announced the changes in the pricing and introduction of subscription fee for iOS users. “From now on, we’ve simplified our business model so that all users on all platforms will enjoy their first year of WhatsApp service for free, and only pay $.99 per year after that”, noted WhatsApp.

The company also announced new features such as backup of messages on iCloud as well as API hooks allowing iOS developers to interface with the messenger more effectively.
