Airtel, Vodafone offer free incoming calls on national roaming for ₹5/day
Airtel and Vodafone have started offering free incoming calls to prepaid customers under national roaming after new rules were laid out by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) which reduced ceilings of roaming rates.
Airtel announced at the start of the month the users can avail free incoming calls on national roaming for just ₹5/day. Vodafone soon followed suite and announced a similar offering through special tariff voucher (STV) just yesterday.
Airtel users would need to send out SMS ‘roam’ to 121 while Vodafone users would need to dial *444*500#. Vodafone has gone a step further and announced monthly plans for both prepaid as well as postpaid customers. Prepaid customers can avail free incoming calls service on roaming starting from ₹71 and postpaid customers can enable this service for as low as ₹75 per month.
TRAI has reduced the ceilings from ₹1.40 and ₹2.40 to ₹1 and ₹1.50 for local and national outgoing calls while roaming respectively. For incoming calls ceiling has been reduced from ₹1.00 to ₹0.75 per minute. SMS ceilings have also been reduced: outgoing SMS reduced to ₹1.50 for STD SMS and ₹1 for local SMS, which were otherwise between ₹3.50 and ₹1.50 before.
