Vodafone India slashes 2G rates by 80%

Vodafone India has announced rate cuts for its 2G data plans in a bid to promote mobile internet among its subscribers by as much as 80% bringing the rates down to 2p/10kb from 10p/10kb.
The rate cuts are applicable in four of its circles as on date – Karnataka, UP West, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with the new pricing slated for a phased rollout pan India said Vodafone. Vodafone’s latest move makes its 2G offering the cheapest in India and will be applicable for both postpaid as well as prepaid customers on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis announced the company.
It has been a common occurrence whereby mobile operators were promoting their 3G services by introducing price cuts across the spectrum but, Vodafone’s latest move is going to instigate a series of price cuts from other operators as well thereby making mobile internet more accessible to subscribers.
“We want to accelerate mobile internet adoption through penetration, consumption and value addition” said Vivek Mathur, Chief Commercial Officer, Vodafone India.
“This 80% reduction in data charges for customers using 2G network is an important step in this direction and we are confident that this move will facilitate in faster adoption and better usage”, he added.
There have been no comments from Airtel and Ideal Cellular as yet.
